Jason Isbell has shared a cover of R.E.M.‘s “Driver 8,” the first single from his upcoming album of covers, Georgia Blue.
The 13-track album, featuring covers by guest singers such as Bèla Fleck, Chris Thile, Brandi Carlile, Julien Baker, is scheduled for digital release on October 15. Vinyl and CD editions will follow on November 26 for Record Store Day Black Friday.
Proceeds from sales will benefit Georgian non-profit organizations.
Isbell had promised such an album of covers if the state of Georgia voted in favor of the Democratic Party in the presidential election.
“Georgia Blue is a labor of love,” according to the Grammy award winning singer-songwriter. “On election day 2020, when I saw that there was a good chance the state of Georgia might go blue, I came up with an idea: to record an album of Georgia-related songs as a thank-you to the state and donate the money to a Georgia-based nonprofit organization.”
“I will admit my motivations were a bit selfish. For years, I’ve been looking for an excuse to record these songs with my band and some friends,” Isbell said in a press release.
